A User Managed PC Operating System

With the “socialization” and idiot protection now the highest priority with Microsoft’s PC operating system (OS) software Windows 10, it’s good to have a power user alternative. Because there are alternatives, I care less about what Microsoft is doing to OS10. They cater to the bumbling hacker attack prone masses and that is their business plan. Power, specific need, PC users are a minority.

Microsoft once had options. MS has produced stripped down “light-weight” operating systems for special commercial applications like cell phones. They used to produce light versions for low end consumer computers, so buyers would have to “upgrade” to get […] Continue reading » A User Managed PC Operating System

Stopping Windows 10 Random Update and Re-boots

Another Windows 10 rant. I am getting very tired of writing these…

Re-boot

Early last evening, I started a 5 hour 3D printing project running on my workshop windows 10 OS computer. I had downloaded the print (.stl) file from my network server. I forgot to disconnect the LAN cable to isolate the computer from the network after I finished the download. The disconnect process is a slight PITA.

After I make sure the first layer of the print has gone down well, I usually walk away to do other things. There is no reason to stare at a running […] Continue reading » Stopping Windows 10 Random Update and Re-boots

Yet Another Windows 10 Defect

Drive “A” with floppy disk

Microsoft seems to have a team of software engineers who have forgotten the legacy systems of the past. I have a powerful quad-core desk computer that has been performing well for many years. It has progressed through several Windows OS upgrades.

Windows 10 has been the worst of all editions. Always something not working correctly or having to be turned off as an undesired “feature”. Every new update changes my preference for Adobe Reader back to the “default” Windows Edge. This is driving me nuts!

This time it is the 2.5 inch floppy “A” drive. The OS keeps trying to access the empty drive […] Continue reading » Yet Another Windows 10 Defect

Windows 10 Goof

Windows 10 did a huge update on this computer two days ago. But not one of those patch and go corrections that usually happen. Not this time. My computer was out of service for more than an hour with several self-induced shutdowns and restarts. I was expecting a major update as there has been news of one coming.

Microsoft dumped this one on me unannounced. A really good OS provider would garner a little more respect from this user with a notice that the update was major and would require several hours’ downtime. It’s simply good manners.

Fortunately, there is a Linux box setting right next to […] Continue reading » Windows 10 Goof

Radeon 5450 in Sandbox

Sandbox (my Linux computer) has been infused with a new PCI-E video card. It takes over the video chores that were being performed by the on-the-motherboard video. It is a VisionTek PCIE 1GB VT which of actually consists of a Radeon 5450 chipset. It’s an AMD product as is the main dual core CPU in Sandbox.

The 1 GB memory on the video card card is now used rather than system memory of the on-board system.

This is not a super high performance video card nor did I intend to install one. This card is low cost and low […] Continue reading » A New View
