No clicks of death and very quite. The format was faster and in fact everything about it is faster. I’m glad because the drive that I spent more than a week in moving my 64 bit Vista install to, started to wither and die. I don’t know if it was a victim of the lighting shock but it could be as it was one of the original drives before the strike.

The Seagate drive came with a nice utility to ghost copy an old drive to a new drive. Since my computer was dual boot I first tried using the 32 bit partition to copy the old 64 bit drive (350 Gig) to the new Seagate (500 Gig). It all seemed to go well but in truth it didn’t go well at all. The instructions said something indistinct about copying system boot files. I was dual boot and the writer never thought about that possibility. What they meant to say was that what I did in a dual boot situation wasn’t going to work. I had to do the disk copy from within the same operating system as the boot disk I was copying.

On Saturday it took me nine hours of interrupted (with honey do’s) effort to transfer the old drive to the new. The honey do’s actually gave me pauses to think about what was going on. At one point the dual boot had been actually booting the old and the new drive at the same time! What a mess. I finally sorted out the sorry pile o’ um… poo.

Now I have a system that is actually faster booting than it ever was. Amazing performance. Everything is snappy. It may be due to the 16 meg buffers in the new drives but whatever, I am highly pleased.

A new problem though. Every time I make drive changes and adjustments to my computer, the installed expensive software thinks it is a new computer so tells big daddy that I need to buy a new license. It takes hours and several phone calls to straighten out that mess. What another crock o’ um… poo.

I couldn’t stand any more stress so I moved my Linux computer back into my office and intend to do as much as possible in this free and upgradeable world of free software. Especially for my ham radio needs. I have to support Vista and my commercial needs on my main computer but they have made life too miserable for a guy like me who like to tinker with hardware without having to buy total new software suites.

The last 500 Gig drive, a Seagate seems to be doing very well.
