My spouse Gloria is away in Ohio for a few weeks. So it is just me and Bingo to hold down the fort. I like this “quite” time as it gives me a chance to think of things and make plans for the future.

I have a million things I want to do so if everything goes right, I may get 2 or 3 of them accomplished.

I did get 4 stainless steel wheels machined on my CNC mill yesterday (Saturday) I offer them for sale in my web-store. I am pleased with myself as I now have the speeds and feeds nailed for milling type 303 stainless steel with a 1/8 inch mill bit. The 303 cuts like butter. I have done two full wheels on one bit and it looks and runs like it will go longer. That’s 4 hours of 13 IPM milling or 260 FEET without breaking. Big help is 6,400 RPM, mist cooling, four fluke bit and lots of time learning the ropes. (old sailor term).

I will spend some more time on the A3 project besides making spare wheels.

I will also be looking and probably starting some new projects for which I can produce kits. I plan to do some different kinds of wheels on the CNC if that makes sense. I am trying to decide where to concentrate my effort. I have too many varied interests and am not very good at settling into just one of them.

The small size hobbyist machine shop such as mine is the perfect development area for model work. Model trains up to scale 1 inch per foot are easily handled. Model airplane engines interest me. All kinds of heat engines can be built. The options are unlimited and can actually be overwhelming and intimidating. The hobby shows are the clearest indication of what is being accomplished by many skilled persons. Where do these people find the time? I know what will be my passion in retirement, the store and my hobbies.

The THMS (store) offers some machine tools. They are there because they are very good tools for the small scale hobbyist. Not the only machines in that class but some of the best I have been able to obtain. My intention with the store is not to primarily sell machine tools. No profit there – honestly. But buy them from me anyway 🙂

I want to become more involved in what I think the hobby is really about. What it really is about is the projects and the creativity. The regional shows prove that fact. The machine tools are necessary, but I want to enjoy the results of using them.

I am reminded of when I first started in the computer hobby 30 years ago. I was so proud of the electronic tool and how it worked, I wanted to show it off. But everyone asked, “But what will it do?” Blinking LED’s didn’t excite the layperson.

Today, we all know what the computer does. Almost no one has any idea what is going on inside. It is just another tool and it is everywhere! Unfortunately (my opinion) it is become another entertainment medium for the masses. Thank goodness for Nuts & Volts Magazine. There is still hope! 🙂

I am taking the week off from the real job here in the middle of July.
