I just did that. I purchased another LinkSys (Cisco) wireless router, this time near the top of the line for non commercial routers, the EA4500. My old unit is the E3200.

Both are nearly the same but the EA4500 has a bit more power and an extra radio channel. The set-up for both is also nearly identical so I programmed the new router the same as the old.

No issues as the new unit started right up. There was only a ten minute drop while I shut down the old router and got the new one back on line. Actually there was no one on the network anyway to care how long it would take. My wife was doing something on her iPhone and she never noticed. It could have just seamlessly switched on and off the cell phone data plan if she was initially on WiFi.

I did a little security tweaking after that time but nothing that required rebooting the router. It was a very easy change using almost identical products.

The Apple Mini-MAC is now connecting and transferring wireless data easily ten times faster than it was. That leads me to believe there is some sort of hardware problem in the old unit besides the dead USB port. It is no more than 15 feet from the router so it wasn’t a range issue due to distance unless the router had receive problems. The Mini-MAC indicates good receive signal strength on both routers.

Being an amateur radio operator for 43 years, I am well aware some 2-way radio transceivers can talk a lot better than they can hear. That goes for their human operators sometimes too! (ha!) The old router may have lost some of its sensitivity (hearing ability) from the shock it received but continued to operate.

It’s interesting to note some wireless networks can ask the receiving transceiver to send or feedback an indication of how well it is hearing the transmitted signal. I doubt that is part of the signal strength reading (the strength bars) that are shown on personal computer wireless connections. I have used that kind of feedback information on some dedicated wireless control links when I first set them up. The XBee wireless modems I used in the Roboboat project have that capability. It would have helped here.

So there are lots of things that can affect WiFi connections. The first requirement is fully functional hardware at both ends; both with good transmit and receive.

In the last post I mentioned I would have to replace the wireless router/switch in my home network system.
