I see I can use it in many ways that were not possible when I first got interested in what Linux could do. In those early days I just wanted something to run packet radio BBS for my ham station. A friend of mine Fred Sole WB8LVP got me into early Slackware distro’s (Slackware is still alive and kicking) as he was using it for the packet BBS he had running. Wow! Everything was legally free to use…

I just made a video using nothing but the free tools available in today’s Linux. I created a series of 41 photo slides each with a one second view and an audio counting process (me) from zero through 40. It runs for 42 seconds as the last slide is 2 seconds long. (Yes 42 because zero was also a second long.)

I used tools called, the “Gimp” image editor, “PiTiVi” video editor, and “Audacity” audio editor. They got the job done maybe not as all-in-one smoothly as the Adobe Suite, but you can’t beat free if you have ever priced Adobe. Adobe also isn’t ported to Linux and probably never will be…

There are some “free” tools like this for other OS’s (like Windows Live) but the OS isn’t free.

It took about an hour or so to build the slides in Gimp, create the sound track and combine all in video. It’s a “proof” of how many squares can be counted in a line drawing.
