I have the full office suite on my business/home computer. I am also running Windows seven ultimate as my OS.

Yesterday I was manipulating some old Excel worksheets (.xls) which I use for tracking material orders in my store. I immediately became alarmed after I opened the first spreadsheet. I could look at it but I couldn’t do anything with it! It said it was in compatibility mode which is normal for an .xls file. The standard mode for Office 2007 Excel is now the .xlsx suffix.

I could not get anything in the menu bar to work and I could not print it. I was immediately panicked WTF? (Where’s The Fire) I thought, or something like that…

I poked at it for awhile and clicked away and came back, when suddenly it started working as it should, Hmmm… send the fire truck home.

Here is the new “feature”. When I double click on an old .xls file it opens in a locked view. If I click away and come back it will (so far) unlock. If I click on an existing .xlsx file it opens in an editable condition.

I don’t know if this is a “bug” but I don’t see any good reason for this new feature. It sure had me in a panic and putting out a few fires.

I have saved that old file in the “new” format so I hope I avoid the problem. I just tried another .xls sheet and it acts the same way. Thanks Microsoft for the new undocumented feature.

I saw a Microsoft Office 2007 update upload in one of my auto update sessions a couple of days ago.
