The KautzCraft Studio (KC) is now my main retirement vocation. I wonder if that means I am not retired. Well, I feel retired so I will keep the designation. KC doesn\u2019t provide me anywhere near a real income, but it does stop me from robbing banks. Banks, because that is where the money is kept\u2026 Ha! I think Willie Sutton is reputed to have said that.<\/span><\/p>\n

I\u2019d much rather be working with silver than in a chain gang.<\/span><\/p>\n

I see an endless number of options and creations I can make while working in my studio. I like working with all kinds of materials with silver so far being the only precious metal. It\u2019s fascinating to me to take something so fragile and temporary as a wax carving and end up reproducing it with solid metal. <\/span><\/p>\n

I am not limited to silver as there are many metals that can be cast in the last wax method. Gold being the most precious down to a basic brass or bronze. I have thought of casting miniature brass cannon replicas and some day may try. Who knows, there may be a collector market\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

That\u2019s part of the fun doing what few others will try. I like being a bit different, even though I know perhaps thousands of other people are certainly doing the same thing. That is not a large percentage when you consider the population we all can access. <\/span><\/p>\n

So I do what I want, when I want, but also looking at what other people like. I would call it market awareness. I recently saw a program on TV about \u201cStrange Inheritance\u201d where a person spent his entire life collecting toy soldiers. He was a person of some wealth and could indulge his hobby. Estimated value at the time of his passing was around $500,000. <\/span><\/p>\n

The problem is no one could be found to display his entire collection as a whole. It could be broken up and sold to a few like-minded collectors wanting a specific piece. But all the dioramas would probably be lost. So it goes, one man\u2019s pleasure may not be another\u2019s desire. The market is for the parts and not the collection. <\/span><\/p>\n

I am not collecting what I make. I have decided to make for others to add to their collections. I do make a few things for myself, but not as part of a personal hoard. I am most satisfied when I know that someone likes something I have made. It has more value to me to know people like to pay for my creations.
