The current flu scare is for the pigs. I am home for a few days with some kind of upper respiratory problem. It has been hanging on for months. However, it has just recently gotten worse. <oink?> The latest media scare tactics about the swine flu has everyone in the USA in a panic. I went to the doctor but didn’t get the swab test, so there is no “name” for what I am enduring. I have more pills to take.
No aches or a pain (other than my PN) so I don’t think it is the swine flu. Slight 100 F fever. Just a deep cough slightly productive that has everyone at the office cringing. For their benefit and mine I am doing some of the “Green” telecommuting. Most of what I do at the office is by computer anyway. I will probably be doing a lot more of this even when fully well. It is the wave of the future.
I owned a Dodge RAM hemi and the 250 miles a week commute to the office (when gas hit the high end) cost me $100 a week for the privilege of driving to work. That would be $5000/year! I traded for the VW GTI (high performance but good mileage) and cut gas cost nearly 75%. Not commuting at all is even better gas expense and good for the environment.
This work from home is creating a whole new way of people management. No longer can a manager be watching the clock for employee hours spent in the office. Part of the business world obsession with KPI metrics, is having a (KPI) Key Performance Indicator to measure and post on a chart. Time is a fairly easy component of a metric. That is changing.
Only certain types of occupations are suitable to telecommuting. Productive salaried (exempt) workers generally spend much more than the 40 hours a week at their occupation, not counting commuting. I am running 50 to 60 hours per week including commute. With telecommuting, the results are more important than counting hours sitting in a chair or automobile. Perhaps my long hours could come back to normal, whatever that is…
There is still time that should/must be spent face to face with peers and customers. A balance is soon discovered. It is a new wave of office based working that has been a long time coming. All that was needed to get it started was some green pigs…
