More Linux Hardware

I have the new computer assembled and am running it from my shop. The case (enclosure) is actually much larger than I anticipated. It is about the size of a small tower case laid on its side. That’s OK as there is plenty of space inside to do whatever is necessary but I was thinking smaller. It is an Antec NSK2480 case which is especially designed to be quite. It came with a 380 watt power supply.

The only thing I do hear is the side fans as I am currently about a foot away from them here on the workbench. I do not hear the processor fan, power supply fan nor the hard drive. So I think they met the goal except for the case fans.

I loaded openSUSE 11.1 from a stone cold start. No set up with Windows or any other OS. Everything was recognized by Linux and every piece of hardware is functioning very well. A very big step (but a long one) from the days when I first started playing with Linux and compiled everything from source code.

On the far right you can see the “bones” of the old computer this one replaces. What a shame. It was a very good computer until the power supply went up in sparks and smoke.

The processor is a 45 watt (low electrical power) AMD 2.6 Mhz Athlon X2 64 bit. It was low cost but high computing power since it is dual core.

Oh… I can still swap a quad core processor into this box (with no other changes) if that sort of brag would impress me!
