Big Game Freeze and Power Play

This is Super Bowl week and there has been some frigid weather here in Frisco, Texas. (Suburb of Dallas.) That is also true for a large swath through the center of the USA. The problem here though is we are not well prepared for solid ice road coverings. We have roads like very high in the sky bridge overpasses. They are ice magnets.

The “big game” players were bused to the stadium with a convoy of personal sand trucks to be sure they got there for “Media Day”. Yes, the teams are getting the royal treatment. I am sure the players are having a few giggles for what is fairly normal weather for them. No matter the weather, the events this week are big money for all the promoters and local business.

The citizens here in DFW do not get much practice driving in ice and snow. Many of the big spenders think their huge 4 wheel drive SUV’s are invincible. They dive OVER the posted limit flaunting tragedy. In snow and ice weather there is usually over 100 traffic stopping wrecks a day on the highway in the DFW metroplex.

On the other side of the coin, there are many people who travel far below the practical safe speed even when on good pavement. It’s good to stay on the side of caution but some folks become a hazard by trying to be Samaritan speed regulators. This irritates those who want to travel at a reasonable rate and a minor level of road rage sets in.

I prefer to just not become involved in the crazy road antics. I can stay put and check into my office work via VPN Internet connection.

This time an unprecedented (1st time) planned rolling black out (RBO) of the electrical service was initiated by the power company. Power went off four times for 15 minutes each time at my house. (Some areas were off for hours) It pissed me off for having to reset VPN computer links, clocks and other electronic equipment each time. No big deal otherwise, but I do have a total electric home, so everything went off each time.

Strange, the blackouts ceased about mid afternoon with no change and in fact colder weather predicted in the evening. Makes me think it was not absolutely necessary. I conjecture Super Bowl may have had a part in stopping the RBO “experiment” in this area as it certainly was not good for business and the sports fans in hotels and planned pregame events. (Think about it.)
