Sandbox 13.04

Actually it is Sandbox running Ubuntu 13.04 but the result is the same. The operating system and the software are the heart of the system. The name sandbox can represent the hardware which seldom changes after the box is built.

The update was flawless as thousands of files were downloaded and installed in their proper locations. This was a far better experience than I had with Fedora. I hope a Fedora fanatic reads this. Hmmm that was me about 6 months ago.

This is actually the second update to Ubuntu 13.04 as my little net-book computer (also running Ubuntu) told me it wanted to update several weeks ago. So we did. Again a flawless update over the WI-FI connection. Sandbox is hard wired.

Actually it is not necessary to update to every new edition. The Ubuntu team schedules releases on a predictable six-month basis. It was decided that every fourth release, issued on a two-year basis, would receive long-term support (LTS). LTS releases are typically used for large-scale deployments. The next one is Ubuntu 14.04 LTS.

I just used one of the features. I was writing this with Sandbox in my office and I am now sitting on the back porch with the the Net-book on Wi-Fi and battery. I am baby sitting my adult daughter’s dog and she needed out. The dog, not the daughter.

The free Ubuntu cloud (5 Gig) automatically transfers everything from one computer to the other. Yes, Apple and all the others do that today too, but it demonstrates Ubuntu is cutting edge. The operation is automatic so nothing to plan or think about. I just walked away from one computer (after saving of course) and opened the other.

If I have an old computer and don’t want to heavily invest in a new operating system? Don’t have any high priced commercial software I need to run? Need a low cost computer for aunt Millie to cruise FB and get email and some Internet browsing? This OS has my blessing.
