Moving Day

I just moved the TEDATUM web site. I was working with POWWEB for several years and all seemed fine. Then “they” decided to move the whole operation from the west coast of the USA to the New England area. A big event they tried to keep a non-event. They did a pretty good job, actually.

I jumped in right after the move and tried to do some updates to the TEDEX forum that runs in a MySQL database. All name servers hadn’t synced up and so I totally hosed up the SQL database save and restore functions. I didn’t clearly understand the process. So TEDEX started over from scratch. I’ll take the credit for that goof.

A month later I wanted to set up this blog but the Powweb OPS panel would not let me create another database in MySQL. I should be able to create nine more as I had only created one. Three days of dealing with tech support proved they couldn’t even find the problem let alone fix it. I also noticed another problem. The daily on-line backups were a week old!

I had a problem with the Powweb SQL server several weeks earlier. It shut down for two days. Tech support said it was OK when they checked it so it must just be a temporary problem. Yeah, right!

Well, I don’t deal with temporary problems very well. Especially the second time they happen. It’s a big world out here, so I just pulled up stakes. Goodbye Powweb, hello new service. T.E.Datum now lives on ix webhosting.

I guess that is as good as it gets with low cost web servers. Oh!… Powweb did find the fault, but too late…
