OneNote

onenote_iconI am thinking Microsoft OneNote may be a better way to maintain my rambling thoughts for this blog than writing using a Word document. My blog Word documents have usually been more like a text note than a truly formatted Word document. OneNote may be a far better tool. I won’t have a directory full of random Word docs. OneNote saves everything internal without using a save button.

Another benefit is OneNote can live in the OneDrive cloud and be shared between computers. I can pick up another PC and make additions to whatever note or document I desire. My cell phone can read OneNote but entering much text would be quite a chore using one finger.

There are a lot of other note keeping tasks and features I can do and use within OneNote that I have not explored.

I think this OneNote system will be a perfect tool for all the things I like to do and keep on record. I see that it could  become a full digital notebook that can replace a lot of the paper notebooks I have used in the past. I may eventually just carry around tablet computer that has touch and stylus abilities, useful for drawing a sketch, like for recording dimensions. Maybe not…

My presently owned keyboard-only Asus Eee Netbook is adequate for testing this idea… for now.

I just reverted my Asus Eee Netbook back to pure Windows 7 by removing the Linux partition and repairing the boot section. I may tell how I did that someday. It is not an easy straight forward fix as I had to do some research and ultimately boot from a USB stick and repair the MBR (Master Boot record) Two operating systems on one netbook computer just wasn’t necessary.

The Eee is working good. I have it loaded up with OneNote and other Windows tools and will see if it will work as a good portable PC for OneNote. I have OneDrive and also Dropbox working as a share space so its 150 GB drive will not be any issue. I think a 150 GB is way more than is needed for a computer of this size, considering how it is/was intended to be used.

I need to do some research as to what computers to consider if I ever want to upgrade. The Windows PC + tablets page seem to be a good starting point for reference of what features will be important. How much power as far as processor(s) and Hard Drive need to be considered. One thought I have now is that a lot of the storage, at least for the OneNote use, can be in the cloud or on my local network file server at home. I don’t need a full desktop or power user laptop.

After all, being a NET book it really is designed to be used by using storage space on a network, whether a LAN or an Internet.
