I never would of thought that a lighting strike could kill something as tough as a paper shredder. Well, it’s true and here are the pictures to show why.
My thinking was there would only be a few switches and gears and just hard core electrical stuff. This thing has more electronics than my first transistor radio back in the 60’s. There are sensors located everywhere and even a vision system to “see” how full the paper bin is getting.
The motor is a rugged beast and I have lugged it down until I was begging for mercy. ThereΒ is a temperature sensor strapped to the side of the motor to shut it off when it works too hard and too long. All and all a very sophisticated piece of machinery.
I hate to see it die. It is a cross cut style shredder and did a very nice job at that. No gluing the strips together on this baby. It just couldn’t withstand a few hundred thousand volts. Tisk.
dan ,
first off i am a very big pack rat i keep EVERYTHING (just ask my wife, when she want to do something simple ,like WALK on our back porch) but any way ’nuff bout me π
those motors are very strong , i think they are A.C. (not real sure electricity is not my strong suit) we had a gear that stripped out on ours (i was gonna try and fix it but, never really found a “CHEAP” source for parts)
i was toying with the idea of using it on a home made spindle for a router.you could make a pulley system to get the speed you wanted for speed.or possible get some kind of pwm (<—spelling??) speed controller for it??? or make some sort of grinder attachment ,the possibilities are endless π
plus there are alot of switches and stuff inside there ,so if the loving spouse will let ya ,just stick it someplace and you might have need of the "goodies" inside at a later date π
ps. tell the wife its my fault you saved it, so your off the hook π
I took a good hard look at them juicy components too. That motor is a brute. The only problem is the shaft already looks like an end mill and there is no fan to help keep the motor cool. Mine is a crosscut shreader and them jaws in there look real nasty too. I scrapped the whole thing, but I was tempted that it might still be too good to throw away. – Dan’l
