The new Fedora (Linux OS) comes out today. No chance it may get pushed back again. Release dates are always subject to review and this last one has already seen some push back, but I just read on the Fedora site release is a go!
No problem with push backs though. The old Fedora 17 is running just fine. I chose Fedora flavored Linux as it is updated on a fairly rigorous (usually 6 month) basis. It is used as the test bed for Red Hat commercial Linux but the code is open to anyone. Red Hat software is technically free but the cost is for the full support, custom setup, on call maintenance, networking, warranty, etc. that business users rely upon and doesn’t come with Fedora and other free distributions.
So that makes Fedora well up on the improvements curve. I use Ubuntu on my Netbook and have used Suse for many years. I am happy with them all but I have to pick one.
I use Linux as my play ground. It’s on my new Raspberry Pi. It makes an excellent server and is widely used in embedded applications. The desktop applications are now very good for general personal and home use, but I doubt Linux can ever unseat Microsoft because of all the specialty business applications written for it only. Most business IT groups don’t want to support Linux at the personal user level.
I enjoy the Fedora updates and the constant update effort because I know I am right on the edge of the latest and greatest although it almost never makes any noticeable change in the way OS works for me. Commercial users want less change and a solid and reliable (stable) OS.” If it ain’t broke don’t fix it” is what support people want.
So I run special communication and record keeping applications for my Amateur Radio station with Linux. I use it for a lot of my writing. With my move toward CMS based web sites I use my home Linux systems quite a lot. Actually, all my remote web sites are running on Linux servers. I wouldn’t have it any other way.
Except at work where I have had to adapt to and work with SharePoint and a total MS computing environment. It broadens my experience which is good.
What’s this round cow? It is the code name for release 18.
