Don’t Do This!

I was restocking the fridge with some diet Dr. Pepper. I grabbed a warm twelve pack from the pantry. Many times I like to open the box like a can dispenser. All the makers of these packs perforate one end so this can be accomplished.

However, it is at least for me extreamly difficult to get the perforations to break properly. Most of the time I end up tearing the complete end of the box away. The bottom section is supposed to remain attached to act like a can stop.

I was struggling as usual so I had the brainstorm of using a paring knife to help break the perforations. I told myself to be careful. I was almost there, just finishing the cut along the bottom at the end of the box.

SUDDENLY! Ka-BLAM!… YOWZA!

The explosion was so loud I thought someone had hidden a large, I mean to say VERY large fire cracker in the box.

It was immediately obvious what I had done, but the force of the resulting explosion was totally startling. It wasn’t a pop. (pun intended) it was a very loud BANG!

Diet Dr. Pepper was foaming out of the box everywhere…

I had either poked a hole or sliced the extremely thin aluminum skin of the bottom can. The picture shows the force of the explosion. I did not pull that can open that way.

Luckily the mess wasn’t too bad, so the clean up was not too bad. Diet soda isn’t as sticky as sweet syrup soda. Half the soda was still in the can in the box. SO maybe 6 ounces to clean up.

So the warning is: Don’t try this at home! I am a professional disaster mess maker. Leave this for the pros.
