The company for which I work (TAC) sent me to Houston a few years ago. I spent an entire summer in that wonderful south Texas weather and traveled between Houston and Dallas on a weekly basis. Our contract was with TXDOT (Texas Department of Transportation) to save energy in their traffic signals.
The project was a lot of fun although somewhat repetitious. I managed a subcontractor with between 5 to 7 crews. We changed about 30,000 traffic lights from incandescent bulbs to LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes). The savings were about 110 watts per signal light. Do the math, we are saving energy!
Most of the work was at night but the pedestrian crossing signals (called PEDs) could be done in daylight. I took lots of pictures and captured one of our electricians hard at work within a “ped”. I guess I shouldn’t have bothered him…
