Smoke and Mirrors

Here is the evidence that lightning will go where ever it chooses. It started at the electrical outlet and finished up in the plumbing. The aluminum (sorry not silver) in the mirror provided a low impedance (resistance) path to ground. The first picture is of course simulated but shows what happened. The second shows where the coating vaporized off the cover plate in line with the neutral wire screw head. There were similar spots at...

The R7 Lives!

The antenna I use for my amateur radio station is a Cushcraft R7 half wave vertical. This antenna has been installed for at least 15 years. It was on my house in Ohio for 3 years and on my present house here in Texas for 12. The lighting strike at this QTH (location ) killed my radio transceiver. I now have a new Ten-Tec Omni VII that I didn’t want to damage by using a...

Number Please?

This is the USB modem I purchased about 5 months before the lightning strike. It was plugged into a rear USB port and had the phone line connected. All I use it for is an occasional FAX as phone modems are so obsolete, they are not installed in computers any longer. It was still hot to the touch  hours after the strike. The circled areas are the burned components . The component board sets on...

Can’t Shred The Evidence

I never would of thought that a lighting strike could kill something as tough as a paper shredder. Well, it’s true and here are the pictures to show why. My thinking was there would only be a few switches and gears and just hard core electrical stuff. This thing has more electronics than my first transistor radio back in the 60’s. There are sensors located everywhere and even a vision system to “see” how full the...
