Computer Update

Lost both my Apple MAC-mini and my Intel NUC-7 due to a lightning strike into my home office. Most all electronic equipment within the entire house was obliterated. In the office – two additional, older, large case, built-up computers were also destroyed. One I called “Ironsides” and the other named “Sandbox”.

All four computers were in use but the MAC (macOS) and the NUC (WIN10) are my primary systems. Ironsides is a WIN10 OS and Sandbox is a Linux OS – LMDE (Linux Mint Debian Edition)

I bought a new MAC-mini replacement and using it now. A back-up called “Time Machine” on an undamaged external 1TB […] Continue reading » Computer Update

Thank You Linus

Linus Torvalds

Fired up Sandbox (my Linux computer) which has been silent for a few months. Checked out the OS (operating system) and did some software updates. Sandbox wasn’t asking for them but since they were available, I brought sandbox up to the now-current status.

Windows 10 OS is still a PITA when doing updates. It’s like a bully who picks on me to have its way. It will run one over to get an update done. Not user friendly in any sense. MAC-OS (Apple) is much friendlier with updates, but they do show up every few months.

Linux is really the “rock” of user friendly computing. […] Continue reading » Thank You Linus

NUC / GTI Performance Update

My tiny but high performance Intel NUC has been performing very well since the fan (blower) transplant. It is everything I need for the job I ask it to do.

There is no worse feeling when a new and expensive item suddenly goes sour. The fan is probably one of the least expensive components in the computer. It was an easy fix. Probably a low bid component selection by Intel.

It’s that sort of thinking that tarnishes an otherwise good product. The extreme performance space shuttle fails because of a lousy rubber O-ring.   No disaster here…

The NUC and Linux

The internet and search engines can bring instant information […] Continue reading » NUC / GTI Performance Update

SandBox Loves Cindy

Cindy

I just updated Sandbox to Ubuntu 18.04 LTS but it was such a dog update, I decided it was time for a real change.

I totally blew everything off the Sandbox C: drive and did a bare bones partitioning and formatting using Linux MINT – LMDE3 Cindy 64 bit OS. The LMDE is an acronym for Linux Mint Debian Edition. The Cindy hints at the default “Cinnamon” desktop. Here is the link: https://www.linuxmint.com/download_lmde.php

Normal Linux MINT uses Ubuntu as its base file source. Ubuntu uses Debian as its source. So the LMDE3 just cuts out the middle man by going direct to Debian.
