Fat MAC

The Apple MiniMAC computer has become my go-to first choice for my daily computer needs. It is equal for the tasks to any of my other machines except OS specific apps. I haven’t abandoned the Linux or WIN10 OS systems.

There have been a few quirks and I did suffer from an invasive trojan virus. So, the macOS is not bullet proof.  Firewalls are up and the fort is again secure. Just have to practice safe Internet access.

The folks at Apple are not shy about overcharging buyers for memory needs. Both RAM and SSD are grossly overpriced buying from Apple. The SSD in the MACmini is soldered […] Continue reading » Fat MAC

Seems Logi-cal

Dongle

I have a Logitech wireless keyboard and mouse on the NUC computer. I installed the tiny USB dongle on the backside of the NUC case. All seemed to be working well but occasionally I could see the mouse and even the keyboard would act a bit wonkey. I think wonkey is the official term.

The mouse pointer would hop, skip and jump. I was doing PhotoShop editing and it was driving me crazy. I thought perhaps the mouse and keyboard need a fresh charge.

I put them both on charge then started to do a bit of research. I discovered there is a known problem with […] Continue reading » Seems Logi-cal

NUC / GTI Performance Update

My tiny but high performance Intel NUC has been performing very well since the fan (blower) transplant. It is everything I need for the job I ask it to do.

There is no worse feeling when a new and expensive item suddenly goes sour. The fan is probably one of the least expensive components in the computer. It was an easy fix. Probably a low bid component selection by Intel.

It’s that sort of thinking that tarnishes an otherwise good product. The extreme performance space shuttle fails because of a lousy rubber O-ring.   No disaster here…

The NUC and Linux

The internet and search engines can bring instant information […] Continue reading » NUC / GTI Performance Update

Intel NUC Fan

Intel NUC

The cooling fan on my Intel NUC minicomputer suddenly went berserk. Sounded like it threw a bearing. A coffee grinder making espresso grind would have been quieter.

I did some Internet research (Intel NUC fan noise) and it seems like the fan has been a problem for these machines. The noisy fan is not an unusual problem.

There is a three-year warranty on the components, so it can be covered by warranty. Two options it seems. Intel can send a fan and you change it yourself, or in my case (pun intended) since I have one of the “kit” version built up by a vendor, […] Continue reading » Intel NUC Fan
