Ain’t Broke!

Many people believe that if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Engineers believe that if it ain’t broke, it doesn’t have enough features yet.

I often say or think the first line. I almost forgot the come-back.

Many engineers are tasked with taking something that isn’t broke and make it cheaper to produce and no better than it needs to be. It’s call “planned obsolescence” when the need is determined to be designed-in failure. In the case of the light bulb, there was a light bulb engineering collusion that occurred on December 23, 1924, that decided the lighting industry needed to have a replacement market […] Continue reading » Ain’t Broke!

A Measure of Success

As I become successful or maybe just prolific in writing posts in my various blogs, the action attracts the attention of a small group of self-proclaimed “experts” who desperately want to “help” me become more successful. It is the exemplification of the adage, “Nothing breeds success like success itself.” I think the original form was, “Nothing succeeds like success. There are many variations with the same message.

Phony Marketing

The sad part of all my residential phone line hassle is that I have almost no personal need to use it. It has become entirely a direct marketing communication resource for solicitors to harass people (me) to purchase things not needed or wanted. A cell phone now fulfills my meager personal communication needs.

There will never be a viable phone industry “no solicitors” list on residential phone calls because there is no outside way to enforce it. Cell phones were once a sacred “no solicitation” refuge but that has been broken too. Personal attention to Caller ID is the only viable remedy.

I had an unlisted (private) residential land […] Continue reading » Phony Marketing

AT&T – Awful Telephone and Telegraph Company

New cable modem WiFi router with VOIP on right. Original WiFi router, Network HD and cable modem, L to R.

They finally did it. Lost a lifelong subscriber, me.

I have been loyal for no real reason. When something works, I have no desire to make changes for the sake of change. “When it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”

My home phone service broke on June 12, 2017. Totally dead line. No dial tone, no noise. Just like someone cut the wire. Could be I did it outside my house where the wire goes into the ground. It has seen nearly 20 years of weed-wacker abuse. I […] Continue reading » AT&T – Awful Telephone and Telegraph Company
